What this guide covers.

What the phrase usually means

“German stainless” usually means that the steel itself was produced to a German standard or by a German steel mill, or that it meets a specification commonly associated with German instrument steel. Also, it does not necessarily mean that the instrument was manufactured in Germany.

What it does not tell you

  • How the instrument was forged, shaped and finished.
  • Whether it was correctly hardened, tempered and passivated.
  • Generally, where the instrument was made.
  • How carefully it was inspected.

Why manufacturing matters more

In general, good steel can be made into a poor instrument if the heat treatment is wrong or the finishing is rushed. Conversely, instruments made from well-specified steel by experienced craftsmen anywhere in the world can perform excellently. In addition, the skill of the manufacturer is just as important as the origin of the steel.

Better questions to ask

  1. What grade of stainless steel is used for this instrument?
  2. Is it hardened, tempered and passivated?
  3. What quality checks are carried out before shipping?
  4. What warranty covers manufacturing defects?
  5. Can I see a sample?

Country-of-origin labelling

Country-of-origin rules vary by market. Reputable suppliers are transparent about where instruments are manufactured as well as where the steel comes from.
