Some extractions end when the tooth is out. Others require the socket to be cleaned, sharp bony edges smoothed or graft material placed. The Aurix Surgical Extraction & Bone Management System is a 13-piece kit that brings extraction and bone-handling instruments together.

What this guide covers.

When bone management is needed

  • Removing granulation tissue from the socket after extraction.
  • Smoothing sharp alveolar edges before closure (alveoloplasty).
  • Preparing a socket for ridge preservation or grafting.
  • Surgical extractions where bone must be removed for access.

Instrument families in a bone management kit

Surgical curettes

Bone or surgical curettes have spoon-shaped working ends used to debride the socket and remove soft tissue and small fragments.

Rongeurs

Rongeurs are spring-loaded, sharp-beaked forceps that nibble away bone, for example to remove sharp edges.

Bone files

Bone files smooth the bone surface after the rongeur, using a pull stroke.

Extraction and soft-tissue instruments

Elevators, periosteal elevators and retractors complete the kit so that the whole procedure can be performed from one cassette.

For the exact list of instruments, see the Oral collection.

Benefits of a dedicated kit

  • Everything needed for the procedure is opened at once — no interruptions.
  • Bone instruments, which are harder to clean, are reprocessed together in a cassette.
  • Consistent layout reduces errors when different assistants set up the room.

Cleaning bone instruments

Bone debris dries hard. Keep instruments moist after use with an enzymatic spray or damp towel, clean as soon as possible and pay particular attention to rongeur joints and file serrations. Open hinged instruments before ultrasonic cleaning and autoclaving.
