Instrument cassettes are perforated boxes that hold instruments in fixed positions through use, cleaning, sterilisation and storage. They are one of the most effective upgrades a clinic can make to its instrument workflow.

What this guide covers.

Benefits of cassettes

  • Fewer sharps injuries — instruments are handled less during cleaning and sorting.
  • Faster turnover — the whole cassette goes from chair to washer to autoclave.
  • Instrument protection — fine tips do not knock against heavy instruments.
  • Consistency — every tray is laid out the same way.
  • Easy auditing — a missing instrument is immediately obvious.

Choosing cassettes

Material

Stainless steel cassettes are durable and suit high-volume reprocessing. Polymer cassettes are lighter and less expensive. Both must withstand repeated washer-disinfector and autoclave cycles.

Size

Choose sizes that match your procedures: small cassettes for examination sets, larger ones for surgical and hygiene kits. Check that cassettes fit your autoclave chamber and ultrasonic basket.

Internal rails and clips

Silicone rails hold instruments in place. Look for layouts that keep hinged instruments open during processing.

Using cassettes correctly

  1. Return instruments to their slots at the chairside.
  2. Close the cassette before transporting it to the decontamination area.
  3. Clean in an ultrasonic or washer-disinfector with the cassette open or according to the manufacturer.
  4. Dry fully, inspect, wrap and sterilise.
  5. Store wrapped cassettes in a clean, dry area.

Labelling

Colour tags or labels on cassettes make it easy to identify kits by procedure or room.

Every Aurix kit, including the Root Elevation Instrument Kit, is supplied in a sterilisation cassette.
